    Getting Around in Rotorua

Rotorua is a dream spot for sightseeing, with boiling mud pools and spectacular geysers, rich Maori culture and beautiful lakes. It's well connected to the rest of New Zealand with its road links, has an international airport and is just 2.5 hours’ drive or a 45 minute flight from Auckland. When you get here, the city's small scale, flat CBD and an effective public transport system makes getting around simple and straightforward.

The Coachman Motel's location on Fenton Street is perfect for taking advantage of all the great options for getting around Rotorua - just pick the best for you.

    On foot

There’s plenty to see around the central city, all within an easy stroll. Visit Kuirau Park, the lakefront, Government Gardens and the Rotorua Museum.

From the central city, it takes about 30-40 minutes to walk out to the Whakarewarewa thermal village, and less than 15 minutes if you're starting from the Coachman.

Arrange your bike hire from the Coachman. Bikes are perfect for local exploring around the flat city as well as the world class mountain biking adventures in the surrounding forests and hills.

There are plenty of organised guided tours to join which can be a great way to get around the local attractions. Many offer free pick up and drop off services. Just pick the attractions that most interest you - the Maori Art and Crafts Institute at Te Puia, Rainbow Springs, the Skyline Gondola or lunch and a cruise on the Lakeland Queen.

    Car hire

Having your own car gives you more flexibility and you can visit attractions not serviced by buses. The main car hire companies are all represented in Rotorua.

Private shuttle, coach and even limo options are also available, ideal for airport transfers, conference groups, day trip adventures further afield or sporting groups. Some offer guided tours as well, or you can organise your own day.

    Public transport

Rotorua Cityride Baybus operates local bus services around town with 10 different routes including to and from the airport and an express service to Tauranga. Some of the routes take you right to Rotorua's bigger attractions making it an easy way to explore. Route 1 for example, will take you from the CBD to Rainbow Springs, the gondola and Agrodome.

There are several taxi companies operating around Rotorua, offering a convenient alternative.
